7 Ways To Reduce Premature Skin Aging

Updated: Jul 26, 2021

Aging is inevitable. The older you get, the longer it takes your body to complete its internal processes. This results in those dreaded signs of aging: wrinkles, sagging, skin dryness and sunspots.

Genes dictate when these changes occur, so it’s largely out of your control. But when they happen earlier than you expect, it’s referred to as premature aging. You can’t avoid premature aging completely, but there are some things you can do to slow down the process. Here are seven ways to reduce premature skin aging.

Protect your skin from the sun

Unfortunately for those who love being outside, at the pool or at the lake, the sun plays a huge role in prematurely aging your skin. No matter what activity you are engaging in — gardening, running errands or swimming — you should protect your skin from the elements. This means sunscreen (at least 30 SPF), a wide-brimmed hat, protective clothing and sunglasses.

Drink lots of water

Hydration is key to keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy. Wrinkles show up faster when you are dehydrated, so try to drink at least eight cups of water every day.

Moisturize your skin

Using a moisturizer on your skin traps water in, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Remove all your makeup before you go to bed

Wash your face at least twice a day with a mild cleanser, and after sweating heavily. Perspiration can irritate your skin, especially if you are wearing a hat or helmet. Be sure to take off your foundation and eye makeup before you fall asleep each night.

Get enough sleep

Sleep benefits your body’s organs, including your skin. Try to get between 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

Eat a balanced diet

Eat meals that include a healthy serving of fresh fruits and vegetables. Research suggests that these healthy choices can prevent damage that leads to premature skin aging. Sugar and refined carbohydrates do the opposite. They can actually accelerate the signs of aging.

Exercise

Being active — whether it’s taking a walk, going for a run, or lifting weights at the gym — boosts circulation and your immune system, which keeps your skin looking healthier. You’ll feel healthier, too!
